Bhutan's verdant valleys, filled with fluttering prayer flags, are surrounded by the tall, snow-capped mountains that have isolated the country for much of its history.
The fluttering prayer flags adorn every high pass in Bhutan. They are a very important part of the Himalayan tradition of ensuring safe passage at high altitudes.
When sent around a mountain pass, they form a chaotic tapestry of cultural affirmation. The flags were traditionally used by Tibetans to spread mantras, bring good luck and prosperity, and ward off demons.
